Our school promotes the full range of fundamental movement skills during break times and pupils are permitted to run.
Our school yard is zoned to allow children to engage in a variety of different activities.
Our school facilitates the use of sports equipment during break times
Short physical activity breaks (go noodle etc.) are used on a regular basis.
All pupils engage in an extended classroom based physical activity break on wet days
Wet Days
Rainy days do not stop us being active! We love doing Just Dance or GoNoodle and incorporating Dance into our daily routine.. Below, is a list of physical activities compiled by the Active Committee that can be done very easily in our classrooms.
Olympics Schools Challenge
Our school is participating in the 2021 Dare to Believe Olympic School Challenge – Road to Tokyo. This is a Team Ireland initiative that wants students and families around Ireland to make the virtual journey with them to the Tokyo Olympics. This challenge aims to get kids excited about the Olympics and also encourages kids to get moving and be physically active every day for the month of June.
Well done to Margaret’s class who were the first team to pass Athens today!!
All the classes created beautiful posters advertising the Tokyo Olympics as part of our Road to Tokyo challenge! Massive congratulations to Kayla in junior infants and Harry in 4th class who won a special prize for their design
Halloween 2021
Thank you to everyone who dressed up today and donated to Temple Street yesterday. We raised over 700 euro. The day ended with a Halloween parade around the school grounds. I think everyone enjoyed seeing all the spooky costumes.
STEAM WEEK 2021
What a great start to STEAM Week. A fantastic group of approximately 150 socially distanced children, adults and dogs went on a science walk along the Barrow Track before school Monday morning. Well done everyone!
All the classes also participated in different maths trails around the school grounds to celebrate STEAM Week!
Seachtain na Gaeilge 2022
Emer organised a brilliant Seachtain na Gaeilge which incorporated lots of physical activity while also getting the opportunity to practice our Gaeilge. Some activities included:
Siúlóíd Ghaeilge – Each class took a siúlóid around the school grounds.
Ag súgradh le chéile – Older classes paired up with younger ones to play simple games as Gaeilge.
Spóirt le daltaí ón nGaelcholáiste – Transition year students came to do sports with each class.
Of course there was lots of Irish dancing too!
Carlow ETNS World Cup 2022
Congratulations to Spain on winning our World Cup tournament, and hard luck to our runners up South Korea.
Throughout April and May the children had an amazing couple of weeks playing out group games and the knockout rounds.
It has been a very enjoyable experience for all the children with some very competitive matches and children from all classes from 3rd to 6th class combining to make up the teams.
The final today was great fun and we had great weather for all the classes to come out and watch.
A big thanks to our first class teacher Eoin for organising such a great tournament. All the classes really enjoyed it.
Sports Day 2022 & Student/Teacher Rounders Game
Sports day was a big hit this year. Every class had a fantastic time and were even treated to an ice-cream.
The day ended with an exciting student – teacher rounders game in which the 6th class narrowly came out victorious!
Thanks to all the organisers and all the parents who volunteered to help out.
Girls Basketball Tournament 2022
September got off to a great start in Carlow Educate Together. We had a first ever girls basketball tournament and it was a great success.
The end off September marked the end of the tournament. The Toronto Raptors and Utah Jazz managed to reach the final. They were captained by Lily Cserni and Rachel Hillebrand. Well done to all the girls involved and congratulations to our winners Utah Jazz!
The boys tournament starts on Monday and will run throughout October.
European School Sports Day 2022
This year we marked the end of September by celebrating European Sports Day. All the classes had great fun playing fun and unusual games. A definite favourite was the crazy clothes peg challenge! A big thanks to everyone who took part and helped out. We can’t wait for next years one already!
Boys Basketball Tournament
Our boys basketball tournament took place in October. Well done to the New York Knicks who bet Utah Jazz in the boys basketball final today. It was a very exciting final with both teams putting in a fantastic performance!
Halloween Witches Walk
To celebrate Halloween we organised a Witches Walk around the school. There were some very spooky costumes on show!
STEAM WEEK
STEAM Week was great fun this year. We had lots of different activities including math’s trails and our annual science walk to school
Active Break Challenge
For the month of November we are participating in a challenge in which every class will engage in an activity for a few minutes everyday. These activities will involve going on a walk or run around the school, showing off our dance moves and trying to compete with Joe Wicks and other fitness coaches.
As you can see from the photos, each class got off to a great start and are really enjoying the challenge!
Playground Leaders
In January our playground leaders sprung into action. Every Monday and Tuesday our senior classes pair up with our junior classes to play playground games at lunchtime. The junior infants are loving learning new games from their peers!
Active Lines
We also launched our active line in January. When the bell rings the active school committee do some exercises with each class. Some exercises include jumping jacks, squats, arm circles, high knees and lunges. Here is our junior infants classes making a great effort!
Friendship Week
This year we tried to get more active for Friendship Week. Junior classes paired up with senior classes to play different playground games. Here is Margaret and Susie’s class having great fun together!
Our Active Walkway
Our active flag committee have started designing and planning our new active walkway. We can’t wait to launch it!

On the 3rd March we launched our brand new active walkway. To celebrate it launch we had a silly sock day where the whole school walked around our walkway in their funky socks!
Run Around Ireland Challenge
For the month of March we will be taking part in the Run Around Ireland Challenge. Over the next 4 weeks each class will build a running break into their day. Class teachers will be given:
A map of Ireland’s famous landmarks
A laminated class challenge chart where you can tick off each landmark as you run to it
A laminated Progress Chart where you can record your progress daily and weekly.
Each Friday there will be two people picked from each class and commended for the super effort they made to improve their running over the week. The class that runs the most kilometers will also win a healthy picnic to An Gairdín Beo.
The challenge has got off to a great start as you can see from the photos.
CETNS Olympic Handball Tournament
Following on from our hugely successful basketball tournament last term, this term we enjoyed an Olympic Handball tournament which ran over the last month. Over 150 children from 3rd to 6th class took part. Today we had the highly anticipated final between Kerry and Kilkenny. It turned out to be a very competitive match, with Kerry just winning in the end! Well done to all involved! A big thank you to Laura for organising and to all the teachers for refereeing matches at lunch time. Our tournament for next term will be our soccer World Cup which everyone is already looking forward to.
World Math's Day
We celebrated World Math’s Day on the 8th March. As part of the day some teachers used our new active walkway to plan a math’s trail. Here are Susie’s 4th class in action.
Seachtain na Gaeilge 2023
Gillian organised a super Seachtain na Gaeilge which incorporated lots of physical activity following on from last year. Some activities included:
Damhsa le Lynda , Cluichí as gaeilge le Eoin agus Céilí le Vicky.
A big thank you to all the teachers who volunteered and tried to make it as active as possible while also getting the opportunity to caint as gaeilge.
Active Walkway
This week 4th class paired up with junior infants to help show them how to use our new active walkway. They had lots of fun together searching for all the different colours together.
Run Around Ireland Challenge
The last day of term 2 marked the end of our running challenge. Every class made a huge effort with certificates being given at assembly each week to those who made the best effort.
Neil and Danny from our Active Committee collected the total kilometers from each class every week and it was very close but in the end Sinead and Deirdre’s class won! A big congratulations to them! We hope they enjoy their trip to An Gairdín Beo. Below we have a member of each class accepting their trophy.
CETNS World Cup 2023
This year, 112 students participated in our annual CETNS soccer World Cup. The USA battled through their group, and won 3 successive penalty shootouts to be eventually crowned the winners of this years tournament. A great four weeks where leadership, humility and respect were on display throughout.
